44th Street Mini-Caissons
New York, New York

Structural Preservation Systems (SPS) was retained to drill 71 mini-caissons at 5 East 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan near Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall in New York City. In this busy urban environment and narrow 25-foot wide site, SPS exceeded all expectations by finishing the job in just three and a half weeks. Helping to ensure that the tight schedule was met, SPS drilled five mini-caissons on the first day of mobilization. The mini-caissons were an average of 40 feet deep, socketed into bedrock and had 120-ton compression capacities with 30 of them holding an additional 75-kip tensile capacity. In order to move in the most efficient fashion, SPS began work in the back and literally drilled itself right out of the site, with approximately the last 25 percent of the mini-caissons being drilled through the earthen ramp that connected the street to the worksite 10 feet below the surface.
